Facts About Positioning Your Child for Sleep
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends placing healthy infants to sleep on their backs in an effort to reduce the risk of SIDS. AAP recommends that infants be placed for sleep in a nonprone position, that is, not lying face down on the stomach. Placing an infant wholly on the back "confers the lowest risk and is preferred....[This] recommendation is for healthy infants only."* If your child has a predisposition to choking or breathing problems, or tends to vomit excessively, your doctor may recommend an alternative sleep position. Parents are advised to ask their child's doctor for a specific recommendation regarding sleep position. It is important to note that the AAP has determined that sleep position alone is not the cause or cure for SIDS. *For more information, see Pediatrics, Vol. 98 No. 6 December, 1996Note: Reference to the American Academy of Pediatrics does not indicate endorsement of this product by the AAP.
